opposed to one released at the Gate Position arrival on
September 12th. Interesting

Hayabusa flight so Far

On September 12th, Hayabusa makes a perfect rendezvous with Itokawa at the
distance of 20 km.
Hayabusa thus successfully demonstrated an Optical Hybrid Navigation, and accomplished
one of the biggest milestones of the mission, showing the worldfs level of the planetary
exploration.
Since then, a series of scientific exploration has been performed in order, and almost
completed the global mapping of Itokawa so far.

touching-down to the surface, also for the gravity modeling purpose, intensive efforts
have been poured to building a 3-dimensional numerical and mathematical shape model
of Itokawa.
This aims at incorporating gravity effect into simulations performed prior to touching-
down events.

On September 30th, Hayabusa descended to the distance of 6.8 km, Home Position,
and entered into a new flight phase.
On that day, Hayabusa fired its RCS engines about 5cm/second to raise the altitude
again to keep its relative position within a certain control box.
Hayabusa will make higher latitude imaging as well as inspection of touching-down
candidate points for a month.
Every scientific instrument functions normally.

 

 

Imaging from Home Position



Right image was taken from Gate Position (about 20 km), while left one was obtained
from Home Position (about 7 km). It is easily observed the resolution has been
significantly upgraded.
Hayabusa project has refrained from releasing high resolution images in order to retain
the scientific output built inside the science team.

 

 

Proximity Operation Phase at a Glance



The location reached this time is Home Position located about 7 km toward Earth. From there,
Hayabusa performs multi-aspect observation.

 

 

Flight Schedule Ahead



In the middle of October, high latitude observation and landing site inspection are planned.
In November, a rehearsal and two touching-down samplings are performed.
At the beginning of December, Hayabusa departs for Earth, returning sample of Itokawa in
June of 2007.
